Carved Brass Ossuary KZ0087
Made in Greece
The Carved Brass Ossuary or otherwise reliquary is a box or case where we keep the remains of the deceased after their exhumation. Afterwards it is either kept in the columbarium of the cemetery or it is repositioned in the left side of the grave next to the family member that has recently died so that they can be together in the afterlife. After the exhumation of the bones, they are washed with wine and water with the proper ritual in the church of the cemetery, then the bones are placed in a white cloth with much care and afterwards they are placed inside the ossuary. Also, the safe keeping of the exhumated remains takes place after a request from the family members and with the responsibility of the staff of the cemetery. The placement of the bones in the ossuary and the memorial prayer from the priest is an important ritual to accompany the deceased in their eternal last residence. A sacred moment for the relatives of the buried and in the same time a sad but necessary procedure for the last goodbye of their loved one. The ossuary is known also as chest, box, or case for bones.
